Post-production masterclasses

  1. Sound design masterclass by Chad Raymond.

For this masterclass, sound mixer Chad Raymond came to teach us about the importance of sound design. It was a very useful masterclass as we were able to show him our rough cuts for his feedback and advice on what sounds to use. He also showed us some before and afters of his work to demonstrate how a scene can be transformed by sound. For example, this slide taught us the different technique one could use to evoke certain emotions. (see below)

He also advised us on copyright laws around sound and music and where we could find good quality sounds for free online. Our editors found this useful as we were struggling to find good royalty free music. I definitely learnt a lot from this session as I had little knowledge of how sound design worked before and felt that this allowed me to see how it can be another creative element of filmmaking.

2. Future Film Lab

While our editors and directors were focusing on the rough cut, the rest of my crew attended the BFI Future Film Labs, which is a day aimed at young filmmakers to help further introduce them into the industry. It was particularly focused on how filmmakers can tell socially and personally significant stories that can inspire change on our audience. We attended a panel of a range of specialists who discussed the importance of using films to highlight issues and then watched a series of short films, mainly on themes of immigration, identity and poverty. As the audience, we casted votes on the most powerful films. This day was really beneficial in broadening my understanding of the social significance of films and inspiring new ideas.
